The Southern Truth

By Gloria Zuurveen, Editor-in-Chief

Colonel Vaughan Witten has risen from a small West Virginia coal mining village of Anawalt with a population of approximately 2000 people in McDowell County to become one of the most prolific authors whose books, Learned Helplessness: The Poison Pill Threat to Black America”  and “The Journey:Appalachia To Paradise to Purgatory” have found their way, with the marketing and promotion expertise of Citi of Books in Albuquerque, New Mexico to the 75th Frankfurter Buchmesse successful book fair held in Germany. Yes. Germany. Colonel Witten, as he recalls his twilight years, has truly made his mark in history against all odds as a Black man having been educated in a small one-room schoolhouse with one teacher who taught six different grade in different corners of a small space. Although having this history of poverty, he refused to allow his past to define his future and he soared to new heights after graduating from high school and excelling in the Air Force which he joined when he was 17 years old. He served 27 years which included three tours in Vietnam, and duty in Thailand, Japan, Greenland, Iceland, Greece, Portugal, The Azores, and the Philippines.  Now he can add Germany as being a place his name has garnered fame. On the bookshelf at the Frankfurt Book Fair which according to Wikipedia is the world’s largest trade fair for books, based on the number of publishing companies represented. It is considered to be the most important book fair in the world for international deals and trading.

The five-day annual vent in mid-October is held at the Frankfurt Trade Fair grounds in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.  The first three days are restricted exclusively to professional visitors; the general public attends the fair on the weekend.  This international event has a tradition spanning more than 500 years. Before the advent of printed books, the general trade fair in Frankfurt was the place for selling handwritten books, as early as the 12th century. A printer’s and publishers’ fair became established sometime in the decades after Johannes Gutenberg developed printing in movable letters in Mainz near Frankfurt; although no official founding date of the Frankfurt Book fair is documented, it had definitely been established by 1462, the year that the printers Johann fust and Peter Schoffer, who had taken over the Gutenberg’s printing operations after a legal dispute, moved their operations to Frankfurt afterwich the fair became the primary point for book marketing, but also a hub for the diffusion of written tests. Colonel Witten books “Learned Helplessness: The Poison Pill Threat to Black America” and “The Journey:Appalachia To Paradise to Purgatoryare all because of his written words and works that the world is recognizing and witnessing this remarkable man’s mark in history and he gives credit to God Almighty as he recalls a passage in the Bible from the an author like himself, James. It is from the book of James, Jesus’ brother, that he quotes “faith without works is dead“. Colonel Witten wholeheartedly believes in this Scripture. He is living proof and his books are a testament to his belief in faith and works combined as being the solution to many of the ills in society today.  In Colonel Witten Journey over the years he has a lot to say from his life experiences and from the looks of it, he is not pretending about what he sees. “Learned Helplessness” was motivated by what he has been witnessing over the past decades of living his life and watching so much learned helplessness he sees when it comes to Black Americans. While his book was making international fame in Germany, here in America he said, “I want to acknowledge and reinforce the idea and reality of the sinful unravelling of our civilized society right before our eyes, yet we as a generalized group sit back and let it happen, though in the end (the wicked, woke, ungodly carnal desire of pleasure and  creature of comforts) along with the stupid need for prideful dominance and money will consume us all in the end. I may or probably will be taking my dirt nap when it occurs, but Ray Charles can see it coming. The Bible, Jesus and many discerning religious scholars have spoken to and about the dilemma of sinful man and what will eventually happen at our time of judgement and I, in my weak voice and insight am taking the risk of rejection and ridicule to straight out tell you, prepare now to live a righteous life of justified production of fruit for the Lord that may produce a passport into heaven.” These profound and powerful words of James are the legacy of Colonel Witten who are producing profitable fruits of faith and works as they are the keys to preventing the detrimental effects of “Learned Helplessness: The Poison Pill Threat to Black America.”  So take heed and read James 2:14-18.

“What does it profit, my brethren, though a man say he has faith, and have not works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister be naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you say unto them, depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them NOT those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? Even so faith, if it have NOT works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works; and I will shew thee my faith by my works.”
