The Southern Truth: Justice in the Classroom: The Urgent Need for Change in Public Schools

By Gloria Zuurveen, Editor and Chief
As the founder and CEO of Parent Action Coalition for Education (PACE), and as both a parent and grandparent, I am outraged and deeply disturbed by the horrific incident that took place in a Colton school. A young girl—who should have been safe within the walls of her classroom—was violently assaulted by a male classmate while a teacher stood by, failing to intervene. This is beyond unacceptable. It is a blatant failure of the public school system, and it demands immediate action.
The California Black Caucus has called for urgent measures, and I stand with them. Some argue that this is not about race. Others attempt to shift blame onto the young girl herself. But what I witnessed in that video speaks louder than any excuse: a male student, significantly larger in stature, manhandled a smaller-framed female classmate as if she were a rag doll. Where was the protection? Where was the discipline? Where was the leadership from the teacher in that room? This is not an isolated incident. Public schools across the nation are becoming breeding grounds for unchecked violence, exacerbated by incompetent educators who fail to uphold their fundamental duty—ensuring the safety and well-being of their students. How can we trust a system that allows such brutality to occur under the very noses of those sworn to educate and protect?

Public education is already under siege. We are witnessing a systemic collapse where students are left vulnerable to physical and psychological harm. If our schools cannot provide a safe learning environment, then they must be held accountable. If teachers cannot control their classrooms, then they should not be in the profession. If school administrations fail to take immediate corrective action, then it is time to overhaul the entire system.
We refuse to sit idly by while our children suffer at the hands of both their peers and the institutions that enable this violence. We demand justice for this young girl, and we demand accountability from the Rialto school district. An immediate investigation must be launched, and criminal charges should be pursued where necessary.
Our children deserve better. Our community deserves better. We will not stop until justice is served and meaningful change is enacted in our schools.
