On a pivotal Wednesday evening, the Inglewood Planning Commission convened at City Hall for a scheduled public hearing that underscored the city’s continuing trajectory as a beacon for innovation, technology, and commerce. At the center of the meeting was a proposal from WePlay Esports, Inc., a company, seeking approval for Special Use Permit No. 25-0000. The application requested permission to operate an event center with on-site consumption of beer, wine, and distilled spirits, along with shared parking accommodations, within a 27,660 square-foot mixed-use facility located at 235 West Florence Avenue.

WePlay Esports is no stranger to Inglewood. Already a tenant in the city, the company has established a strong reputation for excellence in digital entertainment and immersive technology. Their proposal represents not just an expansion of physical space, but a bold step toward creating a vibrant hub for esports, film, and event production in a city fast becoming a global destination for sports and entertainment.

The commission, chaired by Larry Springs, demonstrated the depth and diligence that has made Inglewood a magnet for high-profile investments. The panel—which includes Carolyn Fowler (District 1), David Rice (District 2), Aide Trejo (District 3), and Cheryl Shaw-Williams (District 4)—delivered a meticulous review, asking insightful and strategic questions aimed at ensuring the proposed development aligns with the city’s long-term goals.

One particularly impactful moment came when Commissioner Carolyn Fowler inquired about how WePlay Esports might involve Inglewood’s youth in its programming. She emphasized the importance of creating pathways for young residents to explore careers in technology, digital media, and esports. Maksym Bilonogov, Chief Visionary Officer and General Producer of WePlay Esports, welcomed the opportunity without hesitation. He expressed a strong commitment to youth engagement and offered to work with the city to develop meaningful, hands-on opportunities for local students to be part of the WePlay experience—from internships to creative workshops and tech training.

Bilonogov addressed the commission with confidence and clarity throughout the evening. He emphasized the company’s dedication to community engagement and innovation, noting that Inglewood was a natural choice for expansion thanks to the early support of Larrance Dopson and Sharis Rhodes, a former executive assistant to Mayor James T. Butts, Jr. Their introduction to the mayor led to a groundbreaking collaboration: the production of Mission Inglewood, a cinematic tribute to Inglewood’s meteoric rise, which debuted at the Intuit Dome and continues to generate buzz for its Hollywood-grade quality and local pride.

The commissioners were visibly impressed, and the result was a unanimous vote in favor of the proposal—an endorsement not only of WePlay Esports but also of the Planning Commission’s role as the gatekeeper of Inglewood’s vision. Chair Larry Springs’ leadership stood out for its blend of rigorous inquiry and dignified moderation, creating an environment where business leaders are heard and held to high standards.

Commissioner David Rice, a seasoned developer, exemplified thoughtful discernment—measured in words, yet powerful in impact. His presence reinforces the commission’s balance of experience, vision, and due diligence. Each commissioner plays a critical role in shaping what has become one of the fastest-growing urban centers not only in Southern California but arguably the nation.

Their decision to approve WePlay Esports reaffirms what many observers already know: Inglewood’s Planning Commission is the quiet powerhouse behind the city’s renaissance. Every new business, development, and expansion flows through this vital body—ensuring that progress is not only rapid but responsible.

With this latest greenlight, WePlay Esports is set to scale to new heights, solidifying its presence in a city that now rivals Hollywood in its appeal to creatives, technologists, and visionaries alike. Inglewood, once known for its sports arenas and music history, is now emerging as a cultural and digital innovation hub—with the Planning Commission as its compass and protector.
