Hold Up! What Happened to Senatobia Alderman At-Large, Demitrius Garrett and His Republican Supporters?

The Southern Truth
By Gloria Zuurveen, PACE NEWS

Well, well—this is absolutely telling.

There’s a political storm brewing in Senatobia, Mississippi, just ahead of Tuesday’s election. It’s the kind of story that reveals the truth about the times we’re living in—a truth we’ve seen far too often across this country. It’s the same old strategy: using pawns who look like us but are not with us. Jesus knew it firsthand. Judas walked with Him, learned from Him, and smiled in His face—but behind the scenes, he sold Him out for 30 pieces of silver. The betrayal was real, and the fallout was tragic.

Fast forward to today, and Alderman At-Large Demitrius Garrett finds himself at a similar crossroads. Once a loyal face of the Republican slate in Senatobia, Garrett now finds himself erased—his image removed from the most recent campaign flyers, replaced by Stephanie Huddleston, who now appears to enjoy the full backing of the mayor. The same Republicans Garrett stood by have now turned their backs on him. That’s betrayal. Plain and simple.

But thank God, it’s not too late. Garrett can still come home—to the Newtown community that raised him, believed in him, and saw him through. Like the prodigal son, he can reject the illusions of Babylon and stand up for what’s real. The wolves in sheep’s clothing have revealed themselves—and the Southern Truth is this: he was used and then discarded.

And where were these leaders when injustice struck our people directly?

When a Black mother was beaten in the Walmart parking lot, humiliated and mishandled by law enforcement in broad daylight—not a single word of outrage or public statement came from either of Senatobia’s Black aldermen. Silence. Not a press conference, not a demand for accountability, not even a public expression of concern for the abuse she suffered in front of her children. That silence speaks volumes. It tells us who they truly fear—and it’s not the people who voted them in.

Meanwhile, the election chaos doesn’t stop there. In the recent mayoral primary runoff, Michael Cathey Sr. faced off against Allen Tanksley, where Tanksley was certified the winner by just one vote. That’s right—one vote. Now, Cathey Sr. is challenging that result in court, citing voting discrepancies that could change the outcome of the election. On Tuesday, June 3rd, Judge Albert Smith III will hear the case. Until that hearing is complete, Michael Cathey Sr. remains a viable candidate, and the people have every right to stand by him.

This is not just politics—it’s a fight for justice and fairness.

That’s why this Tuesday’s election is not just important—it’s urgent.
To every voter in Wards 3 and 4, and throughout Senatobia: your presence at the polls is a form of protest, a declaration of dignity, and a demand for respect. Don’t let confusion, betrayal, or manipulation keep you from casting your ballot. If they can try to erase one candidate, they can try to erase you too.

Vote to ensure your voice is counted. Vote to send a message that silence in the face of abuse will no longer be tolerated. Vote to demand leadership that stands with the people—not with the oppressors.

On Tuesday, June 3rd—vote like your community depends on it. Because it does.

This is The Southern Truth.
