California Cannot Afford Another Insurance Failure — Steven Bradford Is the Leader Ready to Fix It

Steven Bradford, Candidate, California Insurance Commissioner

By Dr. Gloria Zuurveen, Editor-in-Chief

There comes a time in California politics when experience must rise above slogans, and results must speak louder than campaign promises. The Southern Truth is that California is standing in one of those moments right now when it comes to insurance, claims, wildfire recovery, and the future protection of homeowners across this state. Families are losing coverage. Fire victims are waiting endlessly for relief. Seniors are frightened by skyrocketing premiums. Entire communities are wondering whether insurance companies still see them as worth protecting.

And in the middle of this storm stands a man who has already proven he knows how to fight for the people — not just talk about it. That man is Steven Bradford.

I have watched Steven Bradford for as long as we have been publishing and operating PACE NEWS. Consistency matters in leadership, and Bradford has been consistent. Visibility matters in leadership, and Bradford has always been visible. Results matter in leadership, and this man has produced results time and time again — not only as a legislator, but as a collaborator who understands how to bring people together to solve problems.

The Southern Truth is that insurance is no longer just about paperwork. Insurance has become a survival issue in California. Families who lost homes in devastating fires have waited months and even years battling claims and confusion. Homeowners who have done everything right — clearing brush, upgrading roofs, protecting their property — are still being punished with higher premiums or policy cancellations. According to Bradford himself, the system needs modernization to meet today’s climate realities and the growing demands of California families.

And unlike many politicians, he is not approaching this issue from theory alone. He is approaching it from experience, from legislative victories, and from years of walking the halls of Sacramento fighting for ordinary people.

Bradford’s vision for Insurance Commissioner is rooted in common sense. He wants transparency in how rates are calculated. He wants homeowners rewarded for protecting their property. He wants accountability from insurance companies. He wants the FAIR Plan strengthened so people are not trapped in expensive last-resort coverage. Most importantly, he wants California’s insurance system upgraded into the modern era so claims are handled more efficiently and communities are not left abandoned after disaster strikes.

That matters.

But Steven Bradford’s credibility was not born overnight during an election season. His record already speaks loudly across California. This is the same legislator who helped push forward the historic return of Bruce’s Beach to the descendants of the Black family whose property was wrongfully taken because of racism decades ago. Bradford did not let that issue die quietly. He pushed and pushed until California finally witnessed justice restored. That was leadership. That was persistence. That was compassion backed by action.

This is also the same Steven Bradford who authored legislation creating the Ebony Alert system in California — ensuring missing Black children and young people would receive the same urgent statewide attention that Amber Alerts brought to others. That did not happen by accident. It happened because Bradford understood that Black families deserved equal protection, equal urgency, and equal visibility when tragedy strikes. That is what leadership with heart looks like.

And yes, The Southern Truth must also remind the people that when the original Watts Star project was ultimately shut down, many would have walked away and allowed the vision to die. But under the leadership of Barbara Stanton, her dedicated team, and with the advocacy and support of Steven Bradford, the mission did not collapse — it evolved. The program relocated to Gardena, where Bradford stepped in and worked alongside the nonprofit on behalf of the community. Through persistence, collaboration, and his commitment to underserved residents, EEIC secured a $5 million contract to provide aquatic career education and workforce training opportunities to the community. The Southern Truth is that Bradford understood the importance of not abandoning Black-led community programs simply because obstacles arose. Instead, he helped transform disappointment into opportunity, ensuring that young people and residents would still have access to career pathways, education, and economic empowerment.

The Southern Truth is that Steven Bradford’s compassion did not start in Sacramento. It started at home — from lessons taught by his mother, a nurse, and his father, a small business owner. Those values followed him from Gardena City Hall to the California Legislature and into statewide leadership. His corporate experience with Sempra Energy gave him business understanding, but his heart for people shaped the kind of public servant he became.

And California needs that combination right now.

Insurance is serious business. Families rebuilding after fires cannot afford endless delays. Seniors cannot afford another surprise premium increase. Working families cannot continue paying into systems that leave them stranded when disaster comes. Bradford understands this crisis is not about politics — it is about people.

His plans call for transparency, mitigation discounts, modernized risk modeling, stronger public-private partnerships, community protection, and equity-focused outreach for underserved neighborhoods. But perhaps most importantly, his leadership style is one built on negotiation, collaboration, and getting things done.

The Southern Truth is simple: Steven Bradford has already shown California what he can do. He has fought for fairness. He has fought for justice. He has fought for underserved communities. He has fought for economic opportunity. And now he says he is ready to fight for California homeowners and policyholders who feel trapped inside a broken insurance system.

California voters should pay attention.

Because when it comes to experience, legacy, compassion, visibility, and results, Steven Bradford is not walking into this race as a newcomer trying to learn on the job. He is hitting the ground running with decades of legislative experience and a proven history of delivering outcomes that people can actually see and feel in their everyday lives.

So vote early. Make your voice heard. Support leadership that has already demonstrated the ability to fight for the people.

The Southern Truth believes that if Californians want results, accountability, and a commissioner who understands both policy and people, then Steven Bradford is the best choice for California Insurance Commissioner.
