It was a beautiful morning in Lynwood, and I had the pleasure of joining Inglewood City Clerk Aisha L. Thompson as she cheered on her 10-year-old son, Quentin Thompson, during his football game. But this was no ordinary game. It was the L.A. Chiefs, a team from Snoop Dogg’s Youth Football League, facing off against Mexico in the very first Turkey Bowl, held at the spacious football stadium at Lynwood High School.
The L.A. Chiefs, known for their fierce competitiveness, took to the field in striking red and gold, their uniforms glowing under the bright sky. Across from them, Mexico’s team, clad in green, red, and white, put up a valiant effort, but the Chiefs dominated. The scoreboard told the story clearly: L.A. Chiefs 22, Mexico 7. It was a decisive victory, and it was all thanks to the excellent coaching of Coach B and the rest of the dedicated staff. From the defensive line coach to the tight-end coach, each player was well-prepared. Even as a former cheerleader myself, I couldn’t help but remember the chants: “Push ’em back, push ’em back, way, way back!” This slogan captured the Chiefs’ determination to prevent Mexico from scoring—and they did just that.
What made this day even more special was the sense of camaraderie and family unity that filled the air. The stands were packed with families supporting their children, and local vendors added to the lively atmosphere, offering everything from Pastrami Mommi’s famous pastrami sandwiches to a wide variety of foods from food trucks.
Coaches B and Dre spoke with passion about the significance of the Turkey Bowl. They emphasized the importance of this international match-up between the L.A. Chiefs and Mexico, aiming to spread the love of football globally. Judging by the respect the teams showed each other throughout the game, their mission is already succeeding.
Since its inception in 2005, the Snoop Youth Football League (SYFL) has set the bar for youth football, providing young players with valuable skills both on and off the field. The Turkey Bowl was a prime example of how the SYFL brings the community together. The league’s mission is not just about football; it’s about teaching kids important life skills such as teamwork, discipline, sportsmanship, and self-respect—while also emphasizing the importance of academics.
Saturday’s event was a demonstration of unity, with families, coaches, and volunteers all working together to create an enriching experience for the youth. As Coach Dre explained, the holiday timing of the game made it an ideal opportunity to bring families together, giving relatives who were visiting a chance to see their young athletes in action.
The success of the Turkey Bowl was made possible by the dedication of the SYFL team. From the leadership of Snoop Dogg, who founded the league, to the tireless efforts of individuals like Khali Wadood (SYFL League Commissioner), Reggie Eskridge (League President), and Terry Tramble (League Vice President), and other Executive Board members the league continues to grow and thrive.
Coaches and team moms such as Dominika Miller, Dee Dee and other volunteers ensure that everything runs smoothly, keeping the youth safe and well-supported. The Snoop Youth Football League’s reach goes far beyond the football field. Each year, the league selects an all-star team to travel to different cities, providing these young athletes with experiences they would never have imagined. Many have the chance to fly on an airplane, visit new states, and play in some of the most prestigious stadiums in the country. Since its founding, the SYFL has impacted over 60,000 kids, instilling values that will last a lifetime.
The Turkey Bowl was a shining example of how Snoop Dogg’s vision for youth football is making a lasting impact in communities across the nation—and around the world.
