I felt like I had stepped back in time as I walked up to the entrance of Alondra Park Gym in Lawndale. There, young people—some under nine—were strutting proudly in fashions straight out of the 1990s, while a DJ spun classic 90s hits that brought joy and energy to the whole room. It was exhilarating, heartwarming, and electric—a marvelous treat on a sun-filled day in Los Angeles.
The occasion? A 90s-themed Awards Ceremony for the L.A. Chiefs, a standout youth football team birthed from the vision of none other than Snoop Dogg, the legendary rapper, entrepreneur, and community advocate. His youth football league has become a beacon of hope and excellence for children across Southern California. And under the strong, passionate leadership of Joe Moses, the L.A. Chiefs are flourishing—on the field, in school, and in spirit.

These young athletes, ages 5 to 14, were dressed to impress. In their best 90s throwback gear—channeling icons like Run DMC and Chuck D—they embodied the bold, expressive style of the era, mixing culture and confidence with youthful energy. It was more than a fashion statement; it was a celebration of legacy, unity, and self-expression.

The gym was packed with love. Parents, coaches, friends, and supporters stood side by side, cheering on the young champions who have shown such dedication throughout the season. From the players to the volunteers, everyone’s hard work was front and center.
One of the most inspiring parts of the ceremony was the recognition of the L.A. Chiefs Cheerleaders, who brought just as much power and pride as the players on the field. These remarkable young girls were awarded trophies for their outstanding work in cheering on the team, their tenacity, and hard work at every game. With spirit, coordination, and enthusiasm, they led the charge—lifting their teammates with every chant and every routine. They were honored not only as cheerleaders but as leaders in their own right, showing strength, confidence, and heart in everything they do.

Among the honored was young Quentin Thompson, a dignified and polite young gentleman whose presence reflects the deep values being cultivated within this program. His mother, Aisha Thompson, Inglewood City Clerk, graciously invited me to witness this spectacular day, and I am so thankful she did.

This was more than an awards ceremony. It was a celebration of greatness—a tribute to how community, creativity, and mentorship can change lives. It was a reflection of Snoop Dogg’s bold vision, which has given young people a place to grow and shine. Leaders like Joe Moses are helping coaches rise from their own past struggles, giving back without looking back, and helping to raise up a generation of winners and warriors.
At Alondra Park, I witnessed something special—a miracle in motion. The joy of youth being uplifted, the power of community coming together, and the soul of football transforming lives, one game and one smile at a time.
Long live the legacy. Long live the love. Long live the L.A. Chiefs.
